viii

I think a mother can see waste
in her child not only by looking at the child
but by listening to what she or he says
The mother can crystallize this for herself painfully
by remembering a similar moment in the life of the child,
a moment in the child’s childhood that foreshadowed the waste
that she always knew would ensue
The mother might then take some blame
upon herself, but she mustn’t;
She must go to her other child
and realize this shit is out of her control
