The War of Parasites

1. Song of Lieutenant

We warred without names.
Only the places where we fought
were utterable. The Isles of the Grey
Sea, the Stretch of Ossified
Wasps’ Nests, there by the Half-
Eaten Strongwood. I became strong
as a fatherless thing, held my gun
to my cheek and shot at columns
of bone. My men were not
totally animal. Dog of theirs
that I was.
